GNUR160L: Chemistry for Health Professions Lab - Virtual Laboratory Activities

In the following activities, you will be using the ChemCollective virtual laboratory. This software allows you to design and carry out your own experiments, much as you would in a real chemistry lab. This flexible simulation will run on most computers without any additional installation.

Using the Virtual Lab

• To help you get started, please watch the this demonstration video, which describes the features and interface of the Virtual Lab. (Note: The techniques used in this video are for demonstration purposes only, we suggest using "Precise transfer mode" when completing your experiments.)


• Windows and Macintosh users: Please use FireFox or Chrome web browser.
  Errors have been reported when using other web browsers.


• The simulation will run on most laptops and desktops. It is currently not configured for touch-enabled devices such as tablets, ipads or phones. Support for such devices is coming soon.


• If you have any technical trouble with the simulation initally loading on your page, often refreshing the page or restarting your browser will solve most issues. You can also for additional assistance.

Identifying the Unknown Metal (Metals Density Problem)
Identify unknown metals by measuring their densities using volumetric glassware and the balance, then compare these measurements to the densities of known metals.


Strong Acids and Bases
Textbook-style strong acid and base problems that can be checked using the Virtual Lab.


Coffee Problem
Use the virtual lab to determine how much milk to add to hot coffee to reach a desired temperature.


Creating a Buffer Solution
Design a buffer solution with specific properties.


Cobalt Chloride and LeChatlier's Principle
Explore the equilibrium reaction of the cobalt chloride reaction.


Determination of a pH solution by the Method of Successive Dilution
Explore the pH scale using dilution of strong acids and bases.


Determining the Solubility Product
Determine the solubility product constatnt (Ksp) for various solids salts.


Determining the Solubility of Copper Chloride
Given the solubility of CuCl at 2 different temperatures, predict its solubility at a third temperature. Then test your prediction by creating the solution in the virtual lab.


DNA Binding Problem
Explore the equilibrium constants in biochemical systems by measuring the binding constant of a DNA-Dye reaction


Determining the Ksp of Calcium Hydroxide
Titrate a saturated solution of Ca(OH)₂ with a standard HCl solution to determine the Ksp of Ca(OH)₂.
Cola and Sucrose Concentration
Prepare solutions of specific concentration of sucrose.
